Are Cell Phones Safe For Kids?

“Children are our most valuable resource.”

U.S. President Herbert Hoover

You may have heard or read news stories over the last few years as to the question of whether there is a link between cell phone use and particular forms of cancer. Recently, the World Health Organization chose to list cell phone and mobile device use as carcinogenic hazards.  This is the same hazard category as:

  • Engine exhaust
  • Chloroform
  • Lead

Many people are taking notice and considering whether certain kinds of cell phone use are having a long-term effect on their own health, but do these same admonitions apply to adolescents?

Cell Phones + Children = Greater Health Risk

According to a Medscape Medical News article by Roxanne Nelson, while there is conflicting data across the various microwave radiation (MWR) test results:

“Children and unborn babies do face a greater risk
for bodily damage that results from microwave radiation given
off by wireless devices, according to Morgan and colleagues.”

In general, studies have shown that children have a higher susceptibility to absorbing MWR. In fact, a child’s brain tissue was shown to absorb twice as much MWR as adults according to one study.  Another report showed kids absorb more than 10 times the amount of MWR in their bone marrow.

Preventative Measures

Unless the cell phone is off, it is always emitting radiation. However, cell phones can be used in a way that is safe. Consult your cell phone’s manual to find out the particular recommendations for safe use, but in general it is recommended that cell phones be held about 1” away from your body when in use. This may mean using FaceTime or speakerphone the majority of the time and limiting your kids’ overall exposure to cell phones.
