Does Cell Phone Use Affect Fetal Development?
Cell phone radiation affects even fully-grown adults by damaging cells and DNA, and young children may be more vulnerable to its effects due to thinner skulls and still-developing cells. For unborn children, cell phone radiation may be even more detrimental by impacting brain development while they are still in the womb.
What Are the Risks?
Several studies have shown that exposing pre-term babies to wireless RF energy can interfere with babies’ brain development. One study showed that RF radiation exposure affects neurodevelopment, leading to behavior problems similar to ADHD. In this study, Yale School of Medicine researchers found that mice exposed to cell phones during the mother’s pregnancy were hyperactive and exhibited slightly decreased memories. A similar study showed that women who reported cell phone use during pregnancy were more likely to report behavioral problems and hyperactivity in their seven-year-old children. A 2008 study found that mothers who used cell phones were 54 percent more likely to have children with behavioral issues.
Another recent study found that long-term exposure to electromagnetic radiation from cell phones decreased prolactin, progesterone, and estrogen levels while increasing uterine oxidative stress in rats. Hormone levels play an extremely important role in a healthy pregnancy by preparing a woman’s body to develop the fetus without abnormalities. Estrogen and progesterone maintain the uterus in order to accommodate a growing baby, while prolactin assists in nervous system and respiratory development. Oxidative stress creates a chain reaction where cells are unable to repair themselves from damage caused by free radicals, produced by electromagnetic radiation. Oxidative stress in the uterus would impact both the uterus and the fetus growing inside.
What Should I Do to Protect My Baby?
Proximity is the most important thing to consider. The closer your cell phone is to your baby’s constantly developing tissue, the more radiation the baby will absorb. Keep your phone away from your body, especially your abdomen, and limit usage as much as possible. When children are young, do not let them use cell phones or other wireless devices. Babysafe, a national wireless radiation safety campaign, has created a brochure with additional information for pregnant women to keep their unborn children safe from radiation. The project advises women to limit cell phone use, keep phones away from the body, and use wired cables when possible.
